Canine Concern Scotland Trust’s Reading With Dogs project. This fascinating initiative encourages young children to become more confident in their reading skills, through reading aloud to non-judgemental and non-critical dogs. Schools in some of the more deprived areas of Glasgow will participate, with 240 primary-age pupils benefitting through increased literacy skills. Quantitative evaluation has already demonstrated positive evidence of the impact on reading skills, showing the reading ages of children who participated improved on average by just over six months in a six week block of lessons. Teachers also fed back improved confidence and reduced anxiety, providing examples of pupils who now volunteer to read in class when they would not have done so previously.
