“It’s been a brilliant experience that has helped me to learn new skills and develop key things like communication, team working and problem solving – all things which I love.” ( Please click on the following link to hear Ladislav talk about his experience of being the first David Doig Scholar in 2019)  https://youtu.be/Xe8_IpJe7YA

It is fair to say Ladislav Horvath has made the most of a six-month scholarship which has seen him work with hundreds of primary seven and S1 pupils as well as teachers from across Edinburgh and the Lothian’s over the past six months.

Twenty-year-old Ladislav is the first ever student to be awarded the David Doig Foundation STEM scholarship – managed by the Edinburgh College Development Trust – and has thrived on his experience of working with the College’s Midlothian Campus STEM team.

Ladislav, who lives in Musselburgh, applied for the scholarship through the Edinburgh College Development Trust in October last year, and once selected, has supported the delivery of the College’s STEM Inspiration Experience programme to P7 and S1 pupils every Thursday. His role has involved interacting with the pupils to help them through a series of activities designed to give them an insight into STEM subjects from an early age.

Ladislav said: “I’ve really enjoyed working with the STEM team every Thursday, it’s been great to get hands-on experience of working with young people. It has also given me chance to work with all the teachers from the different schools as well as students and other lecturers from other campuses.”

HND Electrical Engineering student Ladislav intends to put his scholarship experience to future use and to complete his goal of working with young people – whether that be within teaching STEM subjects or in another capacity.

“I enjoy working with young people and so this has been perfect for me as it has given me exposure to working with school pupils in different situations and I’ll be able to use the skills I have learned and developed in the future.

“I just want to say thank you to the David Doig Foundation and the Edinburgh College Development Trust and everyone else involved for letting me be a part of this, it’s been really great.”

Gillian Doig, widow to David Doig – alumnus of Telford College – founder of the David Doig Foundation said: “It’s fantastic to hear that Ladislav has had such a positive experience in this scholarship which will hopefully benefit him with his future career goals.

“My late husband was a tremendous advocate of education, so to be supporting a scholarship which helps a young person develop essential skills while they work to support those even younger is wonderful. The foundation is looking forward to opening applications for next year’s scholar.”

Applications for the next David Doig Foundation Scholar will open at the start of term 2019/20.
